Human Factors Consultant (one position)

Full time contract position for maternity leave – September 15, 2009 to March 31, 2010 with a possible extension for 6 more months.

Humansystems® Incorporated is a human factors consulting firm located in Guelph, Ontario that undertakes research and development projects for a range of government and industrial clients in Canada, primarily Defence.  We have approximately twenty full time professional consultants (many with graduate degrees) and several Associates who provide advice on a project-by-project basis.  A small administration team co-ordinates proposals and billing and provides data and clerical support.

The Work requires applied R&D in social and cognitive processes (and their interaction) rather than pure research.  Current and potential projects include understanding moral and ethical decision making and leadership in military contexts, trust within small military teams, team processes, performance and collaborative behaviour, social influence, as well as other human factors work.

Your main responsibility will be to assist ongoing conceptual and research work under the direction of a project manager in areas such as social influence, collaborative behaviour, decision making, and other social and cognitive processes.  You may also provide ad hoc support to other multi-disciplinary applied projects in government and industry, such as Program Evaluation.

You will participate in tasks such as:

  • Conducting literature searches.
  • Devolpment and testing of conceptual / theorectical models;
  • Desgin and development data capture instruments such as questionnaires;
  • Data capture, analysis and report writing; and
  • Attending field trials at various project sites.

You must possess very good written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications / Experience
Degree in Psychology (Masters or PhD preferred), ideally with specialization in Industrial Organizational Psychology or Social Psychology, and familiar with applied cognitive issues.  Expertise and experience in Program Evaluation would be an asset.  You should be able to demonstrate both capability and experience in applied research.

Compensation / Conditions
Humansystems® offers a competitive salary structure.  Humansystems® staff work full time in Guelph, Ontario and in Ottawa, and travel frequently to different parts of Canada.  You should enjoy working to deadlines in small multi-disciplinary groups.  The ability to obtain Canadian Security Clearances and willingness to work on military projects is required.
