Michael Matthews, Ph.D.
Senior Associate Human Factors Consultant

Dr Matthews has over thirty years of published research in the application of visual perception, mental workload and human information processing and related display challenges to complex dynamic work environments such as operations and control rooms, command centres, and air traffic control.

Mike currently leads the HSI® Human Factors contribution to the COMDAT (COMmand Decision Aiding Technology) Technology Demonstration (TD) on multi-source data fusion displays for naval command operations and the MUSIC (Multi-sensor integration within a common operating environment) TD with respect to individual and team situation awareness and picture compilation at East and West coast Canadian Maritime Operations Centres. Other current work includes modelling and evaluating potential automation options in naval sonar systems.

Examples of Human Factors projects on which Mike has worked include the following: Measures of performance and effectiveness for various applications including critiquing systems, distributed aircraft simulator training, naval operations room teams, Maritime Operations Centres, and NORAD; A framework for evaluating command and control support systems; Cognitive task analyses of naval Command teams; Laboratory evaluation of human performance on sonar displays; Evaluation of automation options for naval sonar systems using task network modeling; The potential for Test and Evaluation of naval operations room team training simulators; A critical review of situation awareness studies and their application to driver behaviour; A major field study of aggressive driving behaviours on multi-lane highways; Assessment of Human Computer Interface issues for the proposed Canadian Automated Air Traffic System.

Mike was formerly Chair of the Psychology Department at the University of Guelph. He has a B.A. and a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Nottingham and is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and a Past President of the Association of Canadian Ergonomists.
