- 3D Warship Deck Layout for Force Protection
Walk-through of a 3D virtual simulation of upper deck and compartments of a naval frigate together with dockside buildings. Model used for assessment of defence layout for security threats and for networked tactical training of up to 32 players in security teams and boarding parties in ship borne assault / defence tactics.
- Helicopter Deck Landing
A detailed real-time task network software model (IPMEŠ) of goal directed pilot behaviour during take-off, flight and landing of a naval helicopter on a warship at sea. Based on an analysis of typical pilot control activities, this model triggered simulated pilot / helicopter reactions during an interactive scenario in a training simulator to prepare personnel to direct take-off and landing from the ship.
- Multi Screen Cinema Projectionist
Software model (Micro-Saint™) of cinema projectionist tasks to simulate performance and safety issues for operation of multiple screens by a single person.
- Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles (UAV)
To prepare operators of UAVs for control and communication procedures for a joint military field exercise involving ground, air and naval forces. Developed and executed several UAV scenarios and monitored system performance during simulated UAV missions. Assessed UAV operator situation awareness using a post-mission survey.
- Training Simulator Effectiveness
Collected and analysed data in army training simulators and on live ranges to assess speed and level of individual and team skill acquisition and retention using armoured vehicle gunnery training simulators.
- Team Communication
Developed 11 person reconfigurable team simulator using virtual gaming software to study dismounted infantry team communication patterns. Used to explore different information exchange structures (one to all, all to all, all to one, etc) and performance during different scenarios, and associated radio equipment requirements.
- Naval Command Team Training Simulators
Assessment of three naval command team training simulators for potential to provide test and evaluation data on different screen display configurations. Use of command team training simulators to run test and evaluation scenarios and provide individual and team data on situation awareness, target detection speed and accuracy.
- Head / Helmet Design Anthropometry
Survey of head shape and size for 42 soldiers using a laser scanner. Established a database of 3D head scans to model and assess helmet stand-off and sizing.
- Information Flow during Collaborative Work
Cognitive Work Analysis was used to model information flow during maritime Tactical Picture compilation by naval operations room above water warfare teams. Scenario-based communications data were generated using experienced naval operators in a team training simulator, plus direct observation and interviews. Model used to design software support for building and maintaining the maritime tactical picture.
- Submarine Sonar Task Automation
A software model to simulate and assess the potential impact on system performance of automating selected sonar detection tasks presently performed by operators. Selection and modeling based on a detailed function/task analysis. Model validated against user task performance (speed and accuracy) on a simulated sonar display.
- Concept Ship Crew Size Optimisation
Developed crew concepts for multiple-role naval logistics and troop transport vessels. Analysed functions in terms of state-of-the-art labour saving and performance enhancement devices such as satellite communications and cargo management software to minimize on-board crew and maximise performance for tasks such as replenishment at sea, disaster relief, and troop support. An experienced command team of logistics ship department heads validated a detailed watch bill using a disaster relief and damage control scenario.
