Human Factors Research
What we do:
HSI® consultants conduct Human Factors research to answer clients' questions about human performance issues. Different clients raise different questions at the individual, group or team level. Examples of past questions include:
  • How do individuals or teams make decisions under stress?
  • Can commanders change their "style" to match different situations?
  • What leads team members to trust each other?
  • Which night vision device best fulfills requirements for infantry soldiers?
  • How do vehicle drivers maintain situation awareness?
  • How does firefighter team size affect performance and safety?
  • Which parts of a system are best automated and which best left to people?
  • How well does a training simulator improve skill acquisition and retention?
  • How do perceptual factors affect human performance on a sonar display?
  • How do peace-keepers incorporate ethical issues into life or death decisions?
HSI® provides ready access to leading edge human life science specialists.
  • HSI® Human Factors consultants include specialists in psychology and kinesiology at the M.Sc. and Ph.D level, all with real-world experience.
  • HSI® Associates include leading researchers in universities and other institutes. The HSI® Associate network is extensive, allowing HSI® project managers to find the right person fast - usually in less than a week.
The expertise and experience of HSI® Associates complements in-house HSI® Human Factors consultants' skills in perceptual, cognitive and organizational psychology, psycho-pharmacology, work and environmental physiology, anthropometry, biomechanics, psycho-motor skills, statistics and many others.

How we do this:
To answer questions HSI® Human Factors consultants take different approaches.

  • Searching and critically reviewing past studies for existing answers.
  • Building and validating theoretical or computer models.
  • Designing and conducting interview, field, simulator or laboratory studies.
To gather data we use appropriate experimental designs, subject profiles, statistical analyses, and ethical safeguards to ensure confidence in the results.

Why we do this:
HSI® Human Factors research gives clients answers to important questions to help them gain a better understanding of topics such as leadership or trust, or insight into the necessary features or fitness for purpose of a specific technology or product.

Our answers help clients make better decisions, assess risks, evaluate the likely return on investment for procurement or technology development, product or system design, benefit human performance, improve safety, or be more competitive.
